The art of modeling started back in the ancient Greece. Where models were fine art models, and artists used their human form as inspiration for artwork that appears lifelike and accurate. But that changed drastically and now a model is someone who is employed to display and promote fashion clothing or other products and for advertising or promotional purposes. Modeling is sometimes consider an art, even though many people does not think of it like this. Modeling is different from other types of public performance, like acting and dancing. However models still have to express emotion in their photographs, so they can be a successful model. There are different types of models, that include fashion, glamour, and body-part models.
Fashion modeling involves catwalk or runway modeling. In 1943 Clyde Matthew was the first person to use the term "Supermodel" in a "how-to" book he wrote about modeling. " Supermodel" has been used several times in the media in the 1960s and 1970s. A model is known for their beauty and their excellent body, and when Marilyn Monroe became a sex symbol, the ideal measurements for a model adapted Marilyn's (90-60-90). Supermodels are highly paid, and they become known as cover girls, appear on top fashion magazine cover, in catalogues and in fashion shows.
Glamour Modeling emphasizes the model’s sexuality instead of products, fashion or the environment. This type of modeling often focuses on the body. These models are responsible of making calendars, pinup and men’s magazines.
Body part Models are employed for their special and attractive body parts. Some models that are too small to be another type of model have been successful in this type of modeling.
Today the art of modeling have been criticized by acumen critics, who really first thought of the well being of the models than the business. Some models are really skinny and they are consider a bad example for the teen women that admire them. Some of them had been taken off the runways because they are not able to wear a “0” size clothing. Some other had died because of their exaggerated abstemious when eating, when they are looking for the “perfect” body. But not everything is bad the models who have become the supermodel status can earn yearly salaries equivalent to million of U.S. dollars. Even when the model is not famous all over the world, but has a steady full-time-work. Some other reasons women consider on modeling besides money is the recognition and gifts received when they become one of them.

Some history and some definitions of terms-- be sure to just focus on each week's assignment so you don't use up info you might need later. =) Also, I still kind of wondered when modeling became such a big business.
ReplyDeleteThere are some spots where it sounds like you cited information that perhaps you didn't know what it meant or you just didn't explain it enough for the audience-- like what are the 90-60-90 measurements?
I really enjoyed reading yours because one of my favorite shows is America's Next Top Model.I didn't know what models were used for back then, and how they have changed is interesting to me. I think you have a lot of good background information and you have a great start. :]
