Are Actresses Edging Out Models on Magazine Covers?

My article is about actresses taking away models work, I found this article in the New York Times web page. There were many related to my topic, but I chose this one because I thought it was interesting and it could keep my blog interesting. I also chose it because it matches with my latest post. This article has more opinion than facts and it was written by Suzy Menkes.
In this article Marc Jacobs chief sponsor of the Costume Institute exhibition, talks about how models are having hard time appearing on magazines covers, because those magazines are featuring Hollywood stars' issues. "The idea of supermodels came in a pop culture when actresses weren't that interesting. Now Hollywood is filled with young actresses, and there is digital technology to make them look good."(Jacobs) Also Anna Wintour, editor in chief of Vogue magazine, admits that people today is more likely to find star power in Hollywood than on the run way. "The public interest in models these last few years has not been as it was during the early' 90s when Naomi Campbell and Linda Evangelista caused so much excitement, and until models become celebrities again in their own right, I can't see them selling as well on magazine covers as actresses" (Wintour) She also said that in order for models to become popular and famous as Hollywood stars, they are going to have to live that sort of "fishbowl" existence.
For me models this days are only to be on the runways, they aren't as facetious as actresses are and that is why we prefer to see actresses on magazine covers. Also i think that models are just so skinny and abnormal and sometimes even hubris for people to look up, also their type of body and kind of life make people think of how imperfect we are, while actresses are cute, and interesting but they also have a reachable figure for people to follow, and even they show us more about their lives so we realize that they are just like us and i think that is the main reason of why we prefer them on the magazine covers.
Even though I'm used to see actresses on magazine covers, i never thought that fashion models were running out of opportunities to appear on them. I never thought about runway models to appear on something else besides the fashion shows, and i think that is another issue for the fashion industry to consider, because even when they think as their models as perfect the reality is that those models aren't as famous and loved as Hollywood stars are. I also think that people is getting tired of trying to follow models way of living, because of the obstacles and issues they face every day, and that's why don't really see their life as the life we would love to live.

Are Thin Models "In" or "Out" of Fashion?

"Everyone has a passion that is lost on others" (Robin Givhan)

While some people think that thin models are a bad influence for young women and girls, others like fashion industry don't really care, because the only thing they care is about selling their clothes and making their designs become popular and known.

Nowadays Germany's most popular magazine has a new project, use real women for magazine covers. This models are real they aren't thin, and they aren't on diet or in the gym their whole life. "These are women who are taking part in normal life, Women who have their own identity, a job and a name". (Brigitte Huber). This project was created so people would start to realize that there is no need to be skinny to be pretty and neither to be auspicious, also to make society believe on what each person's strengths are and promote self-esteem. "Of course we're still looking for attractive people, but for women who've also got something to say". (Huber) This project isn't about saving money as some people might think, it is going to be opposite, because production cost will be higher since these new models won't know how to pose for pictures as the professional ones would. Last month Glamour magazine published an uncensored photo of a plus size model. Lizzie Miller appeared complete with tummy fat and there was no bowdlerzing . But even though those projects are going on, fashion industry isn't stopping making really small clothing. Recently Polo Ralph Lauren fired model Filippa Hamilton. Hamilton was supposed to appear in an advertisement, but her picture was retouched into a cartoon. The design house said that the altered image was a mistake. ( Givhan). But then the model said that she was fired because she didn't fit the samples. Later the design house called her beautiful and healthy but unable to fulfill her contractual obligations (Givhan)

But actually people are feckless about the effects that skinny models are having on society, in fact people keep asking for this kind of models to keep appearing on magazines covers and advertisements. "The only force that stopped people from buying clothes and magazines was the souring economy, not righteous indignation over skinny models". (Givhan)

"By its very nature, fashion is a business of falsehoods and costumes. The uncomfortable truth about the fashion industry is that it has a knack for tapping into unspoken cultural obsessions". (Givhan) Fashion industry sets a world of perfection, and all indicators show that people follow it because of fear of becoming fat. "Fashion not only reject the overweight and the obese. It also gives the average a hard time, too; it makes them worry about every cookie eaten at the end of meal or every exercise commitment that goes unmet." (Givhan) In everyday life people watch many advertisements with thin models, but they don't really hesitate when they see them, they even want to look like them, but when a fat model comes out people really criticize and make fun of her, whether thinking she is ugly or saying she's fat. "NB C's "Biggest Loser" isn't a success because contestants lose 50- 60 pounds and they become healthier. It's popular because they lose a lot of weight and they become svelte and buff. Those people are competing to be thin not for being healthy. And we don't blame them; we embrace their agony". (Givhan)

"There is a lot to say whether runway models are healthy or not. Some horribly airbrushed photos notwithstanding, the main focus of the complaints isn't that the look is unpleasant but that it's unattainable for most people. And before fashion models get any bigger, people in general will just have to get smaller". (Givhan) " Fashion tells us something about ourselves and our culture. It does that by reflecting a heightened or twisted reality. It may be that the only way to change the fashion industry's portrayal of women in not by trying to make sense of the funhouse reflection but reconsidering the original subject matter". (Givhan)

Movie Review (America's Next Top Model)

"The Girl who is here to win, not make friends"
America's Next top Model is a reality television show, where a number of young women compete for the title of America's Next Top Model and the opportunity to start their career in the modeling industry. America's Next Top Model was created by model Tyra Banks in May 2003, but she didn't only created, she also serves as the head judge, hosts it and is the executive producer of the show. Each season has from 9-13 episodes and starts with 10-14 contestants. In each episode, one contestant is eliminated by the judging panel, they evaluate the girl's development and their abilities to succeed as a top model.
Every episode usually starts by showing the contestants receiving training in an area concurrent with the week's theme. Then it features a fashion challenge, such as a mock runway show or interview, then the judging panel chooses the winner and give her some prize like clothing or a night out. In the next part the photo shot takes place, and each contestant's performance will show her effort. She's going to be heavily judged on what she did for that week, and it's going to depend on that if she stays in the competition or if she has to leave. Photo shots include posing in bikini or lingerie shots, nude or semi-nude, posing with a male model and posing with animals.

The final part of each episode is judging. When judging each contestant's photo is shown and evaluated, the contestants can't be in the room while the judges are deliberating.Next is the elimination, as Tyra reveals and hands out the photos of the contestants that have not been eliminated one-by-one, in order of merit, leaving the two gauche for last. Tyra critiques each one of them before revealing which of the two is continuing on in the competition.

America's Next top model is one of the best reality shows ever made, it shows how hard it is to become a model, but at the same time how cool and exciting this career can be. By watching this show, people can realize that top models are very thin and they are usually under pressure of keeping their body in perfect shape, but also it shows women dream about becoming famous and known. The show is the CW network's highest rated and it has been called the #1 show in average viewers. Its creator, Tyra Banks is one of the most famous and facetious model in the world, she received VH1 award for supermodel of the year, also she was the first African-American chosen for the cover of Victoria's secret catalog. And the producer is a Grammy Award-winning songwriter, record producer, and musician. This show is a very fun and interesting reality show, that shows what life is like for models, that once you start watching it you can't stop watching it until it ends. I really like everything about this show, from what models do to how fun this career can be. I also like it because it's exactly what i was looking for, when talking about modeling., it shows the good side of modeling, how they have fun when they do what they love.
